Plants and other eukaryotic organisms use chloroplasts to capture energy from the sun and utilize it in the process of photosynthesis. This is important for the plants and other organisms because through the chloroplasts, plants and organisms can manufacture their own food.
The chief energy currency all cells use is a molecule called ATP. Cells use their supply of ATP to power almost every energy-requiring process they carry out, from making sugars, to supplying activation energy for chemical reactions, to actively transporting substances across membranes, to moving through their environment and growing.
some prokaryotes obtain energy by oxidizing inorganic substances such as nitrifers that oxidize ammonia to obtain energy.
In ecology, the producers (plants) are the ones that receive the direct sunlight. This energy is then tranferred to the primary consumers who eat the producers. The primary consumers are then eaten by a secondary consumer, and sometimes then by a tertiary consumer. The animal at the top of the chain, when dead, is consumed and broken down by decomposers. This is how energy is passed and tranferred from one organism then another.
